Life on this broken planet might cause us to wonder, “where is God?” When it seems that He is absent, how do we find stability? The truth is, God is always coming near, restoring and rebuilding, healing and bringing love and justice. He is setting things right in His good world so that we can know Him and His loyal love, fully and finally expressed in Christ. Just as God invited Moses to climb the mountain to receive the 10 rules for life in His realm, Jesus, our God-with-us, called people to join him in the new Kingdom he brings, where every person is honored as an image-bearer of God, where love is the foundation, and His Word is the final word. The Sermon on the Mount communicates the ethos of Christ’s rule, where a flourishing life in this re-created world is possible now, because God is near.
